Why should my child learn a second language?

Research shows that there are 3 main areas of benefit:
https://www.actfl.org/center-assessment-research-and-development/what-the-research-shows

  1.  Academic Advantage - students who study a second language have increased scores on basic skills tests.
  2. Cognitive Skills Increase - students who study a second language are shown to be able to evaluate better, one of the highest level skills according to Blooms taxonomy.
  3. Increased Global Awareness - Students who learn a second language can understand people from other countries better.

Why learn Spanish?

- Spanish is spoken by almost 400 million people around the world.  It is the official language of 21 countries.

- Spanish is spoken by over 37 million people in the U.S. alone!

Other benefits:

- Students who study a foreign language for at least two years generally earn higher verbal scores on the SAT/ACT.  Learning a second language increases students’ understanding of their first language!

- Learning Spanish will give your child a head-start in learning other languages.  Once your brain creates connections between two languages, it is easier to make those same connections to other new languages.

How can I help my child?

You don't have to know Spanish to help your child learn! Encourage your student to study the vocab a few minutes each night; participate in homework assignments (listening and looking for Spanish all around you); remind your child to do his or her best both in and out of class; and be an enthusiastic supporter of your child's world language learning!
